Over time, skin loses elasticity in all areas of the body and the neck is no exception. Skin in the neck can sag and loosen causing what is familiarly known as having a ‘turkey neck’. This is where excess skin creates line formations around the neck hiding the angle of the jaw resulting in the neck becoming less visible.
Having excess skin around the neck area can have adverse effects on the overall aesthetics of the face, making you look older than you are and affecting your confidence and self-esteem.
Causes of reduced elasticity could include gravity, drastic weight loss (from a double chin), genetic factors, as well as ageing.
As a result, at Dr Implants we offer neck lift surgery (platysmaplasty) that focuses on removing excess skin and reshaping the remaining skin around the neck area. That will provide you with a naturally younger look with a more youthful neck-to-chin angle.
Benefits of Neck Lift Surgery:
- Confidence boost (You’ll feel fab)
- Reduced Excess Skin
- Youthful aesthetically pleasing neck
Frequently Askedd Questions (Our FAQs)
How will my neck lift be administered?
As there are multiple ways to carry out a neck lift your surgery will be dependent on your aesthetic goals.
Full neck lift surgery takes from 3-4 hours. It consists of making small incisions under the chin or behind the ears. Surgical instruments will be used to reduce the muscle playsma (in the neck) before the skin is tightened around the neck. Should there be any excess fat to be removed, liposuction will be used.
Mini neck lift surgery is carried out by a small incision by each ear and skin is pulled up and tightened.
Alternatively, liposuction alone can be used for neck lift surgery. In this instance, the procedure would only take around 1 hour and consist of a small incision being made under the chin to remove any excess fat.
Will I be awake during my procedure?
Typically for neck surgery, you will be under general anaesthetic so you will be asleep throughout.
If you opt for a mini neck lift surgery you may be under local anaesthetic.
Is neck lift surgery painful? (What to expect after my neck lift)
Most likely you will experience some pain, as well as swelling and bruising after surgery.
Your surgeon would recommend that you stay in the hospital overnight for observation, as the procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.
Following your procedure, your neck will be dressed in compression bandages and they will be required for the minimum of a week.
Additionally, a neck protector will be provided and should be worn for at least 2-3 weeks after surgery to prevent any possible damage.
When can I return back to my usual routine? (Recovery Period)
For the first few days post-surgery it is advisable to rest avoid too much movement in the neck. Additionally, we recommend not wearing clothing what will have to be lifted above the head. If necessary you can resume light activity after 2 weeks and you will return to normal activity within 4-6 weeks. At this point, during the 6th month, the benefits of your neck lift will be noticeable.
How long will neck surgery last?
Usually, neck lift surgery is long lasting. Our high-quality neck lifts will not need revisions for at least 10 – 15 years.
What age should you get a neck lift?
Although the ideal candidate for neck lift surgery is usually 40 – 60 as this is when wrinkling and folding of skin become more prominent, it can differ between patients.
