Our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How will my gynecomastia surgery be administered?
Dependent on what component is causing the gynecomastia your surgeon will decide which treatment is best for you.
On one hand, your treatment could consist of liposuction to diffuse any fatty enlargement in the breast.
On the other hand, the excess glandular tissue would be cut away with a scalpel.
How long does gynecomastia surgery take?
Surgeries of this nature will be carried out in around 90 minutes.
Will there be any scarring?
With any procedure, you should consider scarring as a possibility. Typically, after gynecomastia surgery scarring will be around the nipple area. However, in some cases where major reduction surgery is required, this will result in more scarring.
Will I be under local or general anaesthetic?
More often gynecomastia procedures are carried out under general anaesthetic. Some cases you may be under local anaesthetic and sedated.
What should I expect after surgery?
Post surgery your chest will be swollen and bruised for a period of time which could make it hard for you to grasp the effect of the procedure. Your surgeon will advise you about what garments to wear to reduce this as well as provide you with the necessary medication to relieve you of pain.
Will it take long for me to recover?
You will be required to wear an elastic pressure garment consistently for at least two weeks. Also you will be advised not to exercise for the minimum of three weeks post surgery.
Overall it will take approximately six weeks is how long you will need to recover before getting back to your normal daily routine.
Am I a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery?
Because this surgery is a highly individual, elective procedure it should only be done for your personal benefit. Ideally, candidates would be:
- Physically fit.
- Of normal weight.
- Non-drug users.
Candidates should also have realistic expectations about the procedures, and their breast development would be stabilised.
